New Ticket Office for Looe platform at Liskeard station
The Looe Valley Line

After what is believed to be a 98 year gap, a separate “ticket office” has opened on the Looe Valley Line platform at Liskeard railway station.

The “ticket office” is open Mondays to Fridays until mid September and is run by the non-profit Looe Valley Railway Company, the trading arm of the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership, which works to promote the scenic branch line between Liskeard and Looe. As well as selling Day Return tickets to Looe, using unique specially printed tickets, the office also sells books and souvenirs relating to the Looe Valley Line and other local railways.

The building on the Looe Valley Line platform was constructed by the Liskeard & Looe Railway Company for the opening of the link between Liskeard and the branch line to Looe in 1901. At that time, the Great Western Railway owned the main line and its station so for a few years, Liskeard station had two ticket offices: one for the main line, the other for Looe. This is believed to have lasted only until the Great Western took over the Liskeard & Looe Railway in 1909. The old ticket office, now used as a storeroom, still retains the hatch where people bought their tickets. The building was fully refurbished as part of the £800,000 project in 2004 which transformed the whole station.

Richard Burningham, Manager of the Rail Partnership, said “I am really pleased that, with the great support of our partners, we have been able to open this new facility at Liskeard on the Looe Valley Line platform. It is great to be in the Liskeard & Looe Railway’s building – I often think of it as their Paddington. The rooms we are using had been empty for more than ten years and it is good to bring them back into use. More than anything, I hope our new operation will be another little encouragement to come and take a trip on the branch line.”

Opening the “ticket office” has been made possible thanks to funding from the Department for Transport, Cornwall County Council and Caradon District Council. The Rail Partnership’s work on the Looe Valley Line is supported by the County Council, District Council, Looe & Liskeard Town Council and First Great Western. The main station ticket office, successor to the original Great Western Railway facility, is of course still open seven days a week, all year round, selling a full range of tickets to stations throughout the country, including Looe.
